Hello, this is Shiba Koen/Mita SACHI Dental Clinic.

A dental bridge is a treatment method to replace missing teeth. While the advantage is being able to chew just like your natural teeth, the connected structure to adjacent teeth requires some technique for proper care.
In particular, there are gaps under the pontic (artificial tooth) and between the gum tissue that are difficult to reach with regular toothbrush bristles. If plaque and food debris remain in these areas, they can become a major cause of cavities and periodontal disease in the abutment teeth, as well as bad breath.
Therefore, in areas with a bridge, it is essential to thoroughly clean the gaps and underside of the artificial tooth using specialized tools in addition to regular brushing.
In this article, we will explain proper care methods suited to your bridge design and recommended cleaning tools.

Care Tips Based on Bridge Design (Type)

The shape between the pontic and gum tissue in bridges is broadly divided into two types: “ridge-lap type” and “saddle type.” Check which type your bridge is and care for it using the appropriate method.

  1. 1. Ridge-lap type (with gaps) This design has relatively more space between the artificial tooth and gum tissue, allowing objects to pass through more easily.
    • Care points: This type is characterized by easy passage of interdental brushes. After cleaning between the teeth, insert the interdental brush under the pontic and gently slide it left and right to remove plaque attached to the gum side.
    • Precautions: Forcing the brush in or using an interdental brush that is too large for the gap can injure the gums and cause recession. It is essential to choose a size that “slides smoothly into your gap.”
  2. 2. Saddle type (with minimal gaps) This design has a rounded bottom on the artificial tooth that fits closely along the gum tissue, with minimal gaps.
    • Care points: Because this type has narrow gaps, interdental brushes alone often cannot reach the entire underside of the pontic. This is where “superfloss (bridge floss)” becomes useful.
    • How to use: Superfloss features a stiffened tip that makes it easy to thread through gaps from the side. Thread the tip through from the side between teeth, then pull the spongy section under the pontic. Slowly move it back and forth along the gum tissue to capture and remove attached debris.

Use These Three Cleaning Tools Effectively!

To keep your bridge clean, it is effective to use the following three supplementary cleaning tools (care items) in addition to a regular toothbrush.

  1. 1. Interdental brush → For cleaning between teeth and areas with gaps under the bridge.
  2. 2. Superfloss → For cleaning narrow gaps where interdental brushes do not fit easily and for scrubbing the entire underside of the pontic.
  3. 3. Tuft brush (single-tuft brush) → A toothbrush with bristles gathered compactly like a brush tip. Recommended for pinpoint cleaning of areas around the abutment teeth of the bridge and the back of molars that are difficult to reach with a regular toothbrush. Highly useful for both ridge-lap and saddle types.

⚠️ Most Important Precaution for Bridge Cleaning

Because bridges connect adjacent teeth together with metal or ceramic, you cannot thread regular dental floss from above with a snap. Attempting to force floss in from above can cause it to catch or become stuck, so always thread interdental brushes or superfloss through the gaps from the side.

Make Your Bridge Last with Daily Self-Care and Regular Checkups

Daily self-care at home is most important for maintaining your bridge in good condition for a long time.

If you are unsure which type your bridge is, concerned whether your interdental brush size is appropriate, or having difficulty inserting the tools, please consult our clinic before forcing them and injuring your gums.

During our regular checkups (maintenance), in addition to professional specialized cleaning, we carefully explain the proper care methods and tool selection suited to each patient’s individual bridge design and gaps.

We will support you in keeping your mouth fresh and clean so you can enjoy comfortable meals for years to come. We look forward to your visit.
