Hello, this is Shiba Koen/Mita SACHI Dental Clinic.

How do you choose the toothbrush you use every day? It is often thought that “they are all the same” or people choose one “just because it’s popular,” but in reality, the most suitable toothbrush varies depending on the size of your mouth, the alignment of your teeth, and the condition of your gums.

Continuing to use a toothbrush that is not right for you can lead to increased plaque buildup and may even damage your gums.

In this article, we will introduce the basic points for choosing the perfect toothbrush for yourself, along with our recommended toothbrushes available at our clinic.

Two Key Points for Choosing a Toothbrush: “Bristle Firmness” and “Head Size”

The first things you should check when choosing a toothbrush are the “bristle firmness” and the “size of the head” (the part where the bristles are attached).

1. Bristle Firmness (Soft, Medium, Hard)

  • Soft: Characterized by low irritation to the gums. This is suitable for those with delicate gums, such as those whose gums swell easily or bleed during brushing. However, because the bristles are soft, you need to brush carefully and take your time to remove plaque effectively.
  • Medium: A well-balanced, general-purpose type that is easy to use for those with no particular issues with their teeth or gums. If you are unsure, we recommend starting with “medium.”
  • Hard: It is often thought that “harder bristles remove more dirt,” but brushing with too much force can cause the gums to undergo recession (shrinking downwards) or wear down the tooth surface. If you use one, it is important to brush gently with the appropriate amount of pressure.

2. Head Size (Compact Size Recommended)

Toothbrushes with a small (compact) head are highly maneuverable. The bristles can easily reach fine areas, such as the back teeth, between teeth, and areas with complex alignment. A compact toothbrush is particularly suitable for those with smaller mouths or those who often miss spots when brushing their back teeth.

Two Recommended Toothbrushes Available at Our Clinic

At our clinic, we carry two types of toothbrushes that are easy to use depending on the patient’s oral condition: “Picasera” and “MAXIMA.”

① “Picasera”: Fits Perfectly Even in Complex Tooth Alignments

Picasera is characterized by its compact head and curved neck.

  • Recommended for:
    • Those who find it difficult to reach their back teeth with a toothbrush
    • Those with uneven tooth alignment that is difficult to brush
    • Those with delicate gums
  • Features: The curved neck design makes it easier for the bristles to reach the back side of the furthest molars and areas with complex alignment. Additionally, the bristles feel gentle, so those concerned about gum swelling can use it without strain.

② “DENT.MAXIMA”: Reaches the Very Back with an Ultra-Thin Head

The major feature of DENT.MAXIMA is its “ultra-thin compact design,” with a head thickness of only 2.6 mm.

  • Recommended for:
    • Those who feel pain or discomfort from the toothbrush hitting their cheeks when brushing back teeth
    • Those who find it extremely difficult to brush their furthest back teeth
    • Those who want to carefully brush each individual tooth
  • Features: Because the head is extremely thin and the handle is long (long neck), the toothbrush can be inserted smoothly deep into the mouth. It is designed to easily brush areas like the “cheek side of the back teeth,” which are difficult to reach with ordinary toothbrushes.

Summary: Which Toothbrush Should You Ultimately Choose?

It is important to choose a toothbrush not just because “harder seems to brush better,” but based on whether it “suits your own oral environment.”

The optimal toothbrush changes depending on your oral condition, such as whether you are concerned about your gums, have complex tooth alignment, or often miss spots on your back teeth.
