Hello, this is Shiba Koen/Mita SACHI Dental Clinic.
Have you ever wondered, “Why do I need a professional cleaning when I brush thoroughly every day?”
In reality, there are types of buildup that simply cannot be removed through careful self-care at home alone. Plaque (a mass of bacteria) adheres to the tooth surface. If left alone, plaque hardens and turns into “calculus” (tartar), which cannot be removed with a toothbrush.
Because the surface of calculus is rough, it makes it even easier for more bacteria to attach, becoming the root cause of cavities, periodontal disease, and bad breath. Therefore, regularly removing this buildup with specialized dental instruments is the first step toward maintaining beautiful teeth and healthy gums.
[Our Clinic’s Cleaning Process]
At our clinic, we follow these steps to accurately assess your oral health and aim for fundamental improvement.
1. Periodontal Examination Scaling (Calculus Removal)
First, we perform a periodontal examination to check the condition of your gums in detail. Afterward, we perform “scaling,” using specialized instruments to carefully remove plaque and calculus attached to the tooth surfaces and gum line.
2. Re-evaluation (Checking Gum Condition)
After scaling, we allow a certain period for gum inflammation to subside before performing another periodontal examination. This is because gums are often swollen when calculus is present, making it difficult to judge their true condition. We first remove the calculus, observe the gums’ response, and then determine the next step. You might wonder, “Why can’t it be finished in one visit?” However, this is a vital period for correctly evaluating the actual state of your gums and proposing the most suitable care.
3. Treatment Proposals Based on Inflammation Status
Based on the results of the re-evaluation, we provide treatment tailored to each patient’s individual condition.
• If inflammation remains in the gums: SRP (Scaling and Root Planing). If calculus or bacteria remain deep inside the gums (periodontal pockets), inflammation is likely to recur over time. During SRP, we thoroughly remove buildup hidden inside the gums and smooth the root surfaces, creating an environment where the gums can easily recover to a healthy state.
• If gum inflammation has improved: Professional Care (PMTC/Airflow). For those whose periodontal concerns have improved, we proceed to care that removes stains and biofilm (a sticky film created by bacteria) from the tooth surfaces, leaving the mouth even cleaner and more beautiful.
Types of Polishing and Professional Care
■ Insurance-covered PMTC
We clean the surfaces of the teeth using specialized brushes and rubber cups.
■ Self-pay PMTC
This option offers a wider variety of instruments and specialized pastes than insurance-covered treatment, allowing for an even smoother and more thorough polish of the tooth surfaces. It is ideal not only for preventing cavities and periodontal disease but also as care to bring out the natural luster of your teeth.
Standard Cost (Estimate): 6,600 yen (tax included)
Main Risks/Side Effects: Susceptibility to staining varies by individual, and the effects are not permanent. Regular maintenance is required.
■ EMS Airflow (Self-pay)
Using a jet spray of fine powder and water, this method efficiently yet gently removes stains and biofilm from detailed areas, such as tooth surfaces and the gaps between teeth. It is recommended for those concerned about staining from coffee, tea, or wine, or those aiming for a more translucent smile.
*To ensure safe and reliable care, EMS Airflow treatment is offered only after the initial periodontal examination and scaling (Steps 1 and 2) have been completed.
Standard Cost (Estimate): 8,800 yen (tax included)
Main Risks/Side Effects: Susceptibility to staining varies by individual, and the effects are not permanent. Regular maintenance is required.
Maintaining a Healthy and Beautiful Smile
Calculus and biofilm gradually re-attach during daily life even after cleaning. By receiving regular maintenance at a dental clinic, you can expect the following benefits:
* Prevention of cavities and periodontal disease
* Prevention of bad breath
* Improvement of staining and maintenance of natural whiteness
* Keeping your own teeth healthy for a long time
Daily self-care combined with professional care at the dental clinic. By pairing these two, let’s maintain a healthy mouth that you can always feel confident about.
At our clinic, we propose the best care tailored to each patient’s oral condition and preferences. If you are considering a dental cleaning in the Shiba Park or Mita area, or if you have any concerns about your oral health, please feel free to consult with us.
